Assessment of the extent of homophobia and transphobia in different sports compared over time
The dataset documents which sport respondents in Germany associate most strongly with homophobia and transphobia, based on unaided answers. Responses are compared across two measurement points — 2023 and 2025 — among sports-interested people who perceive a problem of homophobia and transphobia in sport.
Soccer dominates both waves by a wide margin. In 2023, 76% of respondents name soccer; by 2025 this share drops to 59%. No other sport comes close to these levels. The "Other" category falls from 17% in 2023 to 4% in 2025, while boxing rises from 2% to 5%. Basketball drops from 3% to 1%. The response "all sports" increases slightly from 4% to 5%. Wrestling moves from 1% to 2%. All remaining sports — including athletics, tennis, handball, and swimming — register between 0% and 2% across both waves.
